Akari 70EN Pendant by  for .

Isamu Noguchi, a Japanese-American artist and designer, started designing the Akari Light Sculptures in 1951. He created over 100 models and named the series "Akari", which means brightness, lightness, and light in Japanese.

The Akari lamps are made using a meticulous process that involves stretching bamboo rods over Noguchi's original wooden moulds. Strips of Washi paper are then cut to match the lamp's size and shape and meticulously attached to the bamboo ribbing. Once the glue sets, the wooden form is removed, making it easy to fold the shade.

All the light fixtures are produced in the Ozeki workshop in Gifu, the very town which inspired Noguchi to create the Akari.

Herman Miller has the sole license for the Isamu Noguchi collection in the U.S. and the Far East. Therefore the export of these products from the UK to the U.S. is not possible.
